IT Carlow booked their Sigerson quarter-final spot against current champions DCU after a three point win over IT Sligo in IT Carlow. In terrible wet and windy conditions the battle of the IT’s seen Carlow hold off a number of Sligo attacks before the final whistle.
An IT Sligo Cathal Kenny point in the third minute kickstarted the game. Corner-forward Chris Healey was then on hand to get IT Carlow’s first score by side stepping Darragh McConnon on the edge of the small square to blast the ball past Brian McGovern to the ITS net. Monaghan native and corner-forward Adam Treanor was IT Sligo’s main scoring threat as the number 15 managed to find the posts for the next four scores as ITS gained a two point lead. The ever accurate Chris Conroy added two points from IT Carlow free’s as goal hungry Chris Healey continued to pressure Brian McGovern as the number 1 pulled off a massive save just before half time to make it 1-3 to 0-6 at the break.
At the restart, Treanor and Clinton exchanged points for ITS while Tipperary native Mark Russell cancelled those scores with two points of his own as he kicked with a gale force wind. Chris Healey added a another score for ITC while Conroy continued his flawless free taking adding two more points extending Carlow’s lead to two. Lightneing quick Michael Hurley dipped and dodged around the ’45 to eventually find the posts giving ITC a three point lead with one minute of normal time to be played.
During the remaining five minutes of injury time Clinton, a past student of IT Carlow was forced off with injury while substitute Cathal Surlis tested IT Carlow keeper Robert ‘Samo’ Samson as the number one pulled off a terrific diving save to prevent a Sligo IT comeback and ensure an IT Carlow victory.

Player of the match: IT Carlow’s Mark Russell ruled the roost at mid-field. The Tipperary native kicked two points along with creating some valuable scores for IT Carlow. Kevin Ryan, Chris Conroy and Will Young also had exceptional games for the South East side. Adam Treanor was also on form for Sligo but the corner-forward was starved from play in the second half. Clinton also starred for the NW side but was forced off with injury late in the game.
Moment of the match: With the wind Sligo IT kicked a huge amount of wides in the first half. Rather than kicking the ball to the proficient Treanor they kicked from distance wasting scoring chances. IT Carlow punished these mistakes by ensuring they made a score when they had possession.
Score of the match: Corner forward Chris Healey completely caught Darragh McConnon off guard when he scored his first half goal. Seen in the video below, the agile and rapid quick feet of Healey helped him shake off McConnon and also pass McGovern with ease to blast the ball to the back of the Sligo net.
