Sigerson Preview: IT Carlow hoping for repeat of 2015 campaign

It’s a battle of the IT’s as IT Carlow take on IT Sligo in IT Carlow on Tuesday night in the first round of the Sigerson Cup.

IT Carlow will be hoping to build on their successful 2015 campaign, after qualifying for the weekend and go that one step further after being defeated by UCC in the Sigerson semi-final UCC 2-12 Carlow IT 0-8. The men in red and black have had little triumph during their O’Byrne Cup spell. Defeats from DCU, Wexford and Dublin are bound to have knocked the ITC spirits but will be more than willing to bounce back for their first championship game. The addition of last years fresher Tipperary dual star Tommy Nolan will also be an added bonus to the Carlow side.

Similar to IT Carlow, IT Sligo had little luck in their FBD league losing at the hands of NUIG, Roscommon and Mayo. IT Sligo also lost out on their Sigerson Cup spot when they lost out to eventual finalists UCC who also defeated IT Carlow in the semi-final. Earlier in the year IT Sligo Manager Willie Gormley spoke to after the Sigerson draw.

“It will be a very difficult game against Carlow, especially in their own back yard”. “IT Carlow were Sigerson Cup semi-finalists last year so, we have a very tough game ahead of us.”.

The winners of this knockout round will face either the 2015 Sigerson champions DCU or Athlone IT in the quarter-finals.

Given forecast for the SE of bad weather for the next 24 hours the all or nothing game will be extremely tough for both sides.
