Birr 5-10 Lusmagh/Drumcullen 4-7
After playing each other for over 140minutes over two weeks Birr eventually prevailed to book their spot in the U16 A county final after overcoming a tenacious Lusmagh/Drumcullen side. A personal tally of 2-5 from Sarah Harding pushed Birr over the line in the latter stages of a high scoring encounter in St.Brendan’s Park Birr on Saturday evening last.
Wing forward Kaitlyn Kennedy opened Lusmagh/Drumcullen’s scoring account after she broke forward to point and continued to run riot in Birr’s defence throughout the game. Sarah Harding was quick off the mark to answer hitting her own point back setting the pace for a very intense fast game. Similar to their first clash two weeks ago, Lusmagh/Drumcullen hit the ground running with two quick fire goals from Hannah Larkin and Leah Gath seen Lusmagh/Drumcullen’s lead extend to six points in the twelfth minute. Amy Byrne at centre-back caught everything that crossed her path at number 6 while Aoibhe Whelhan kept a number of attacks at bay protecting Caoimhe Dunne between the posts for Birr.
Gath who hit 1-5 during the game added two more points to her sides score sheet while Sarah Harding and Frances Hoare popped over crucial points to keep their side in touch. Just before the break Frances Hoare found herself in the right place at the right time to find the back of the Lusmagh/Drumcullen net making it 2-4 a piece at half time.
It was a very much so one sided encounter in the second half as Birr edged in front with second half goals from Sarah Harding, Roisin Donovan and Niamh Middleton separating the sides. The ever determined Lusmagh/Drumcullen side never give up in the closing stages of the game hitting two goals from Oliva O’Meara and Sinainn Glynn to close the gap back to 0-5, but one final point from corner forward Roisin Donovan exteneded the gap to six as Birr now march on to face St.Cillian’s in the U16 A county final.
